Goodbye Stefano

We all at Dege & Skinner are very sorry to loose a wonderful man. One of our tailors Stefano sadly passed away the weekend before the Private View. He has taught his craft to many, and his current student Emma won a prestigious award – “Young Tailor of the year”. I had done this drawing of him a long time ago and forgotten about it. We will miss you Stefano!

‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’ runs until 7th January 2012

Homi Pernet

Just finished creating a photo-booth installation at 3 Objectives to photograph our Guest-of-honour Diane Pernet. Daniel my friend and photographer insisted he wanted to test-run before the big day and needed a “Fake” Diane…I jumped at the opportunity to be my muse for a few seconds.

The patterns are collaged in a way that the negative space creates a fashion model.

Thank you Diane Pernet

Thank you so much Diane Pernet for all your support.

I am so excited that she is coming to London to open Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother at the Modern Pantry. This drawing was the first one I did of Diane, which Vassilis Zidianakis of ATOPOS cvc spotted and thus the journey began.

Following the exhibit – I am in-conversation with Diane about the communication of fashion  - be it in the medium of art, illustration, photography and film. The event is on the 15th at 3Objectives. Hope to see you there -

Happy Birthday Marian Kihogo

I am inspired by the eccentric Marian Kihogo who informs me it is her birthday next week. It’s also a big week for ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’. Marian was so kind enough to write a lovely post about the exhibit.

Klaus Nomi drawings in Coilhouse magazine

I am so pleased to share that my Klaus Nomi drawings are published in Coilhouse magazine Issue 6. I received a lovely letter this summer from editor Meredith Yayanos requesting they use these drawings for her article on Nomi.

I couldn’t refuse having looked at the beautifully put together earlier magazines. Their mission is to cover mainstream and underground fashion, art, music and technology. To Buy

These drawings are very special to me. I was introduced to Klaus Nomi’s music by visiting the lovely Pippa Brook’s blog Madame Says, who also featured my work, and ever since become a fan of my pattern collages.

They were then spotted by Diane Pernet who requested they be included in a show Marktshe curated The 3 Nomi drawings along with Dead Man’s Patterns were exhibited in Scope, the Lincoln centre, New York. It was most exciting when Diane informed me that they were featured in New York times style magazine.

‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’ at the Modern Pantry runs until 7th Jan 2012.

The Set – ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’.

Diane goes to the Prom

Diane Pernet goes to the Proms. This is the final drawing for ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother.’ This drawing is made up of a bespoke shirt yoke pattern cut by Master Shirtmaker Robert Whittaker from Dege & Skinner along with 3 floral print replicas of the paper dresses from the ATOPOS cvc archive.

This morning I’m excited – we install the exhibit at the Modern Pantry  for tomorrows opening.

Diane, the Oriental doll

The final collage drawing for ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’ is Diane Pernet depicted as an Oriental Doll. The collage is made up of 3 collar fused end patterns (used to cut fusing the stiffens the end of a shirt collar) cut by Master Shirtmaker Robert Whittaker of Dege & Skinner along with 2 images of floral paper dresses from the ATOPOS cvc archive based in Athens, Greece. I have also cut out a shape of a A-line paper dress from one of my dead man’s bespoke Savile Row pattern.

3 Days to go…

Diane Pernet, the seductress

Another collage-drawing created for the show. This time the allure of Diane Pernet, the fashion seductress is made up by using 2 sets of bespoke shirt collar’s cut by Master Shirtmaker Robert Whittaker of Dege & Skinner coupled with 3 various replications of the paper dresses from ATOPOS cvc archive. They were extracted from their exhibition RRRIPP Paper Fashion catalogue.

4 days to go before ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’ opens at the Modern Pantry

The Savile Row Peacock

I collaged patterns and imagery to create a peacock. The rationale being Savile row men when attired are really handsome peacocks. The negative space between the brown paper patterns creates the shape of the peacock and the man’s head has been extracted from a vintage tailoring book. The separate pieces are printed on archival matte and acetate.

The artwork has been commissioned for Sheridan & Co….Thank you Julien

New work – “Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother” exhibit

London 18th Oct 2011: I am working on 8 more Diane Pernet impression-collage-drawings for the exhibit. The series have developed since their inception…I have returned to the drawing board with fresh eyes and am using more actual bespoke Savile Row patterns – thus in the process creating something far more precious.

“Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother” at the Modern Pantry, 8th November – 7th January 2012

“Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother” at the Modern Pantry

“Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother” – An exhibition of collage drawings by artist Hormazd Narielwalla at the Modern Pantry.

 8th November – 7th January 2012

London, Monday 17t October 2011: ‘Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother’ is a series of paper collages by artist Hormazd Narielwalla inspired by the cult fashion curator Diane Pernet. No mere follower of fashion she remains impossible to pigeonhole. In response the collages combine paper shapes sourced from three paradoxically eclectic historical sources; reproductions of 1960s American paper dresses archived at ATOPOS cvc (a Greek cultural centre), original tailoring pattern drafts from a Victorian cutting book (from the London College of Fashion) and original Savile Row cutting patterns discarded after the death of customers. The iconic fashionista appears resplendent from the remnants of disposable dresses, antique patterns for clothes that were never made, and patterns for men whose meticulous measurements are made redundant by death. The series followed a commission for two large scale works by ATOPOS cvc for the RRRIPP Paper Fashion touring exhibition and was first exhibited in Athens, Greece at 4 Fashionshake III by Ozon Magazine.

The Modern Pantry hosts the exhibition.

The restaurant is a keen supporter of the arts and Hormazd Narielwalla is the 10th Artist to exhibit work in their dinning rooms on the first floor.

Anna Hansen’s cooking reflects her Danish ancestry, a childhood in New Zealand, and a culinary journey to the UK. Documenting my work-in-progress

The purpose of this video produced by my friend and fellow artist Ed Burton is to give my viewers a glimpse of my work-in-progress methodologies. In this video I am attempting to search for a form within the form by collaging various Savile Row bespoke tailoring patterns from Dege & Skinner’s archive.

William Skinner from Dege & Skinner makes a sartorial check

Block Party until the 25th at Victoria House is worth a visit. The Crafts Council i n association with Lucy Orta did a very considered job on Block Party and I was very pleased with my contribution. I choose various pattern components to create a collage jammed between 2 perspex sheets and is placed on a metal table frame to emulate a cutting table. I loved wearing my first bespoke Suit cut by Master Tailor of Dege & Skinner – Michael Skinner  whose biography I have recently written. I am also very grateful to William Skinner who supported my artwork for the exhibition.

A big Thank You to  Daniel Schweitzer for 3Objectives for taking the photos.

Negative Space – For Block Party

Film-maker Frederico Urdaneta was commissioned by the Crafts Council to make this film that accompanies Block Party: contemporary craft inspired by the tailor.

“Negative Space explores the process and tradition of bespoke tailoring. Hormazd Narielwalla, artist-in-residence at the prestigious Savile Row civil, military and sporting tailor Dege & Skinner, and pattern cutter Nina Penlington, take us behind the scenes, offering a rare glimpse into the workshop and pattern archive. Both reveal their unique relationships with paper patterns.”
