Work in progress – Vagina series!

More on flickr

I am very interested in the way artists have represented female sexuality through their work and the one’s that most stand out are the flowers painted by Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo, and photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe and Gian Paolo Barbieri. All these artists have used floral shapes, flowers, shells and other earthly objects to depict orifices, openings, and folds depicting female sexuality. This made me realise that patterns are constructed to cover genitalia so it is quite ironic that through my art making process they are collaged to become the very thing they were constructed to cover. I have zoomed in on darts, armhole openings, triangles and collaged various other patterns to create a set of 15 collages.

I have christened the series – “The Patterns of Life – Vagina Series” – more to follow.
